Apply for this course

This honours degree programme has been developed to produce graduates who are equipped to take advantage of the exciting opportunities available in the expanding UK equine industry.

Enhanced by the College's impressive knowledge base and extensive industry contacts, this programme instils the scientific and entrepreneurial skills required to develop products and businesses within a broadening market place.

After a generic year one, students will be able to tailor their learning to reflect a business or science emphasis, whilst gaining relevant vocational skills and industry contacts during an employment placement in the second year.

Year three provides the opportunity to choose four 'elective' modules from an extensive suite and an honours project topic, making this a truly flexible study option.

Career prospects

The College has an unsurpassed employment record. In fact, RAC students have been entering responsible positions in the equine industry for more than a decade. There now exists a network of employers who recognise the superior quality of the RAC education.

Career opportunities include management positions within developing agricultural and equine enterprises specialising in marketing, production and finance. Science-orientated graduates will gain the skills and knowledge to drive technological innovation within industries underpinning equine sports, education, welfare, and bloodstock. After completing an honours degree and MSc in Equine Science at Aberystwyth University, I joined the RAC in 2000. From this point forwards, I have been focussing my research attention on abnormal behaviours exhibited by horses. Indeed, this has become the topic for a part time PhD, the results from which are now published in several academic journals and book chapters.

I also place an emphasis upon knowledge transfer to the end user. As such I'm often involved in talks and workshops attended by horse owners with an interest in equine behaviour. As a member of the BSAS technical and ethics committee, I have been instrumental in organising several equine conferences at the RAC. Among my personal interests are angling (sea, game & coarse), and the collection of antiquarian fishing books.

The reputation that the College has..…puts it head and shoulders above other universities."

David Howard

I have always had a keen interest in horses and left school at 18 to work in horse racing. I worked in racing yards for seven years and rode as a conditional jockey. On retiring from race riding, I applied for various managerial and administrative roles within racing but, due to the number and quality of applicants, I found it difficult to secure a position.

I investigated various courses that would allow me to retrain, strengthen my CV and gain a valued qualification.

When I learned of the equine programmes available at the Royal Agricultural College, I had to find out more. The reputation that the College has and the regard that its graduates are held in by employers, puts it head and shoulders above other universities. I chose to enrol on the BSc Hons Equine Management degree.

The programme gives you the option of selecting a wide range of modules and you are able to pursue either a science based or a more business based route. The tutors are very knowledgeable and have a wide range of connections within the equine industry. There are some excellent opportunities to meet with visiting speakers and the placement during the second year allows you to make further contacts in your chosen field.

I am thoroughly enjoying studying for this programme and would recommend anyone with the desire to gain a strong equine degree to give it serious consideration.
